HEAVY DAMAGES CLAIMED

"Preliminary argument was heard nt the Supreme Court this morning in a case.in'which the Waimiho Sawmilling Company (in liquidation) is claiming from Thomas George Cook Howe, of Waimiha, MQ,WO damages for alleged illegal seizure of property under lease to defendant. Defendant claims, that the company failed to carry out the terms of the lease under which the property wan held from him, wherefore he reentered and seized the timber land, sawmill, tramways, and everything -lse. His Honour made* an order that the ([uostian of rescinding the interlocutory injunction should be dealt with at the hearing of the case on Monday next, defendant having the right to sell the land in the interim, subject to all plaintiff's right?, if any. An order was previously rondo for costs amounting to X 225, ,md Dr Bamford applied for an increase of lhi« amount secured for costs owing to an increase in tho claim from ,£12,000 if ,£46,000. His Honour made an order for security for a further sum of J]7s. The case is"expected to Inst some five days.
At a special meeting of the Ahikoukn River Board. Qr-jytown, a rate of 93d. in the £ was struck on the capital value. It waa decided to give some assistance t»i tho soldier-settlers at Ahikouka to prevent the encroachment of the Waiohino Eiver.
