NEW RAILWAY WORKS
By Telegraph—Press Association Wairoa, March 10. The District Engineer, Mr. C. E. Armstrong, iu an interview last night, 6tated that tho Waikokopu railway works were about to bo commenced. He had during the (lav conferred with Maoris through whoso land the railway will run and had been successful in letting contracts to them for three-and' a half miles of construction work. Natives are to be paid Is. Gel. per yard, the Department supplying pcoopsj and plant, .except small tools and horses', which will be found by the Natives. Mr. Armstrong stated that he was running a light line from Teuhi Hill to the beach to bring shingle for ballasting. Ho expected this to lie the cheapest shingle yet handled in the Dominion. He thought the lino would be built and the stations erected in two years, .is there were no great construction difficulties. The Minister of Public Works was giving every passible ass : stance. As soon as the Department sends the balance of the plans further contracts will lw let. Plenty.of Native labour !s offering at present.
