PETONE COAL SUPPLIES
COUNCIL DEPUTATION'S ALLEGATIONS. • DEALERS DEMAND APOLOGY. (To the Editor.) Sir,—Recently a deputation, consisting of the Mayor'of Petone, with Councillors Anderson and Tovey, interviewed the Prime Minister regarding coal supplies for the Petone Borough Council's retail yard. AVe are informed, per Press reports, that serious reflections were cast on ilio honestv of the coal merchants of Petone, Mayor' M'Ewan stating that with the exception of the council all dealers in Petone pave short wei?hr. We resist that our Mayor should so far have forgotten the dignity of his high office as to descend to making unjust and damaging statements against a body of men who were not present and had no means of defending their honour. It is not our intention to enter into a discussion regarding the merits or demerits of the) cnnncTPs endeavour fo create, a monopoly of coal supplies further than to say that the mere fact of the denutation havum to descend so low as to bring unfounded nnd damaging accusations, unsupported bv proof of any kind, to their aid, intensifies the weakness of their request. AVe take this opportunity to denv absolutely and positively the deputation charges regarding short weight, and Rive the Mayor this opportunity to at once nublic.ly tender to us an anolo°y, failing which we will take other steps to vindicate our honour. (Signed) .TAR. P. GAYXOtt. J. JACOBROX AND BON. ,T. ,\. C.TMtV. G. D. ir/TOWEN (for M'Ewen. Carter and Co. Ltd.) Petone, March 1(1.
