—I — f Professor B. E. Murphy, of Victoria • College, lias been advised bv cablegram th.it he has obtained a certificate of pro. ficiency equivalent to first-class honours in economics. A dinner was held on Monday evening by the staff of Bannatyne and Hunter, Ltd., in honour of the managing; director of the firm, Mr. H. C. Hunter, who is leaving by the Mejantic on a visit to Canada, via New York. Mr. H.'.A. Goodwin, who presided, proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs. Hunter, and spoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Hunter was held by every member of th» staff. On behalf of- those present he heartily wished him "bon voyage." Mr. N. Phillips, who 'has been secretary to the Bristol Piano Company, Ltd., Wellington, for a number of years, has been appointed manager of the company's branch at AVanganui. Mr. W. A. Gordon, of the local branch, succeeds him as secretary at Wellington. Mr. P. Wallace,, Auckland secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, is at present •in a private hospital, having undergone ah operation for appendicitis. Mr. J. A. Fraser has been appointed District Land Registrar at Nelson, succeeding Mr. R. H. Bourke, who has been • appointed Deputy-Commissioner of Stamps at Dunedin. Mr. A. H. Fletcher, of the Auckland office, will succeed Mr. Fraser as Assistant Land Registrar and Deputy-Registrar of Deedi at Christ, church. Mr. Fraser has been Assistant Land' Registrar at Christchurch for the last two years. Mr. Somuel S. Patterson, of Tinakori Road, died last evening at the age of 65 vears. Ho was a native of County Down. Ireland, and before coming to N T ew Zealand in 1901 lived for a period in Australia. He leaves one son (Mr. W. Patterson (Wellington) and three daughters. Mrs. W. Billman (Ngam), Mrs. Hammond (Cliri.'tchurch), and Miss Patterson (Wellington).
