MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ADDED WATER IN MILK. Three oharges of supplying to the city milk depot niilk containing added water were preferred against Thomas P. Leitch, dairy farmer, of Makara, in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. E. l'aee, P.M. Mr. J. I'rendeville, of the Crown Lau- Office, prosecuted, and called evidence to show that three samples ■taken simultaneously from ten-gallon cans of milk supplied by Leitch contained 9 -Del 1 cent., fi.s per cent., and 9 per cent, added water, respectively. It was also stated that the defendant's milk had been of poor oualitv for some time past, and he was not now supplying; the City Council. '■ The defendant admitted the charges and stated that anything he had- done was done in. ignorance. a as ho had only recently taken up dairy farming and was verv inexperienced. He could not account for. tho presence of tho wator in the milk. A fine of ,£ls, together with £2 Bs. fid. costs, "was imposed, two of tho informations being struck out.
RECALCITRANT TERRITORIALS. A. number of Territorials were proceedagainst by the Defence authorities for failure to attend parades. AV. Hickling, a previous offender, who had not attended a single parade for some considerable time, was fined i! 5 and costs, whilst Andrew Hislop was fined X' 2, and IV. Fvffi 30s. Pines of 203. were imposed on J. A. A'Court, E. E. Mason, A. G. V. Rudman. and D. Brewer, and of 10s. on W. ,T. Conolly, M. T. Puller, H. H. Standbridee, and A. D. Watts, p. A. Palmer and F. L. Reardon were each lined 55.. while D. W. and'M. C. M'Allee were convicted and discharged. W. A. Adams was fined .£2 for failing to register.
GENEROSITY IMPOSED UPON. Marked ingratitudo was revealed in the caso of Jessie Nixon, alias Elizabeth Watson, a middle-aged woman, who admitted stealing .£7 7s. Gd., the property of Mrs. Ethel Wogner. It appeared that accused and complainant were in the General Hospital for treatment, and became acciuainted through being in tho same ward. The accused' confided to Mrs. Wogner that she was in straitened ciroumstances. and after her discharge from the hospital Mrs. Wogner invited her to eo to live with her on her farm, a few miles out. of the city. Tho accused availed herself of this generous offer, and after remaining at the farm some timo suddonlv decamped after stealing a sum of money belonging to Mrs. Wogner, The accused, against whom there were previous convictions, was sent to gaol for two months.'
OTHER CASES. As the outcome of a family squabble, Patrick Gubbin was bound over in tho sum of .£25 and one surety for a liko amouit to keep the peace for twelve months towards his grown up daughter. Mar'v M'Manus Manning was sent to raol for two months on n charge of solicit,in? in Kent Terrace, and was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. On n charuo of drunkenness Mary Campbell was fined 10s. Arthur Harry Hart, described as a theatrical man, was remanded on ibnil till next Wcdnasday oil a charge; of indecontlv assaulting a boy of ten years at Lv.ill Bnv on March 2. For Sunday trading Hilda E. Holt, confectioner, was fined 20s. and costs. The secret commission cases ' against Prank Montague Pearn and Arthur Reeves Thomas were further adjourned.
