WAR MEMORIAL
H SITE TO BE WELLINGTON. Last session Parliament voted a sum of ,£100,0(10 for tho erection'of a national war memorial. The Minister of Defence (Sir James Allen) stated at the time that this monoy would not bo expended immediately, and that he proposed to set up a committee to consider plans. His own idea was that the proper 6ite for tho national memorial was Wellington. The National War Memorial Committee, which consists of Sir James Allen. Hon. J. Or. Coatcs, Hon. Dr. Pomare, Messrs. C. J. Parr, J. P. Luke, L. M. Isitt, W. D. Stewart, T. E. T. Seddon, and E. Newman (all members of tho House of Representatives) met' in. Wellington this week, and adopted the following resolution:— "Tho memorial should be 60 designed ns to embody the objects and sacrifices of the war, and tho virtues displayed therein, in such a wiay that they will be nn education, and an inspiration, not only to present but to future generations, and so he of imiuenso influence in tho formation of New Zealand national character." The committee decided also that the site of the memorial should be in Wellington. It authorised tho Mayor of Wellington to nominate four additional members of tho committee. The Minister of Defence stated yesterday that tho committee would meet again later to consider details of sito tind design. Tho conmiittco might dccido to call for competitive designs. He did not anticipate that much progress could made boforo tho next session of Parliament.
