BUTTER AND CHEESE
PRODUCERS ASK FOR FREE MARKET.'. Tlie representatives of the producers in t.ho butter and cheese industries havo bean in Wellington for tho past two days to consider a cablegram from the Imperial Government asking for informationfrom the New Zealand Government as to tho terms and conditions on which the owners of butter in New Zealand were prepared to trade with Britain. The ouestion to bo decided is a very important, one. and it is not likely that it will bo finally decided for some days. In effect, tlie reply .of tho dairy produce people was that they stood for a free market, subject to such conditions as rnicht be imposed by the Imperial Government. A reply on behalf of the New Zealand producers of butter and cheeso was forwarded by the Prime Minister yesterday. So fnr as can be learned, the m-oduccß have not yet definitely rejected an extension of the requisition, but have, simply stated that_ they prefer an open market. If a requisition is insisted unom by the Imperial Government tho terms have still to be considered.
