FIRES
DESTRUCTIVE OUTBREAK AT WALLSEND. By Telegraph-Press Association. Greymouth, January 27. About four o'clock this morning a destructive fire occurred at Wallsend, the Brunner Council Chambers, the Post Office, Roberts and Leach's store, and Williams's butcher shop being entirely destroyed. The flames had a good-hold when discovered m Roberts and Reach's store,'' which contained keroseno and oilier inflammable material. There is no water supply, and the Taylorville bridge is down, so that residents oil the otlier side were unable to get across without delay. A few departmental papers were saved from tho council chambers, but nothing was saved from the otlier premises. There was no insurance on Williams's butchery, but a small insurance on the other buildings, the owners and occupiers of which have' sustained heavy losses, > MANAIA HIGH SCHOOL DESTROYED Hawera, January 27. A fire was discovered at 5.30 this morning in the Munaia District High School. The flames had a strong hold, and no water supply wa,? available. The. Manaia brigade, which turned out, was able to 6avo some material, but otherwise the building nud contents were totally destroyed. Luckily there was no wind, and the tire' did not spread to the Technical School building, which is separated from the High School by only a 6hort space. The cause of the fire is not known. It is remarkable that tlio Opunake School was bunwi about this time last year.
