A case of great importance to soldiers, and the first of its kind in the Dominion, wan heard at the Magistrate s Court, when Henry George Short, contractor, Huntlv, was charged that being a person who 'purchased chattels with moneys received by way of assistance under the Repatriation Act, he did sell the same without consent in writing of tho officers of the Repatriation Department. Defendant pleaded guilty, but claimed that tho offence was more one of carelessness than anything else. Counsel for the Department said defendant had been granted .£250 to purchase a carrier's plnnt. He did not make a success of tho business, and sold one of the horses. The Department had no desire to.press for a penalty, but wished the case to net as a warning. Defendant was con-victed,-and ordered.to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. He was also ordered to pay i:l2 for the horse within a week.
