AMATEUR COMPETITIONS

The amateuff competitions, now a popular institution with Wellington theatregoers, were again staged in tho Grand Opera Houso last evening. Practically every seat was occupied, and the entertainment proved very acceptable. Tho programme, which was of a very diversified order, was generously padded with vaudeville turiu, some of which wero contributed by professionals. Of those the star item was contributed by Carr and Mnnle.v, Australasian heavy-weight lifters. They gave a remarkable exhibition of skill and strength, and one of tho team lifted by dint of both feet and hands weights aggregating 5001b The pick of Iho prize-winners at previous competitions, together with some charming juvenile amateurs, also figured to advantage on the stage,/and at intervals throughout the evening selections were rendered bv the ever-popular "jazz'' orchestra. The competitions, which wero. confined to the second-half of the prosrrammc, were, as usual, productive of very varied fare, and the audionco entered into tho spirit of tho trials with zest. Some of the competitors were subjected to lively sallies, accompanied by tokens which were not of the floral order, but on the wholo the audience exercised ireatc.- forebearance than hitherto. Tho following were tho prize-winners: Sentimental t-ong section—M.r. J. Montecomo ("That Tumble-down Shack"), 1; Miss Oueouio Wilson, special prize; vaudeville, Mr. Frank Andrews (trick pianist), 1; Charlie Chaplin impersonation (juniors), Tom and Harry Sifflct (equal), 1. Tho comedians would not face tho audience.
