PLUNKET SHIELD CONTEST WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, December 2G. The Plunket Shield match Wellington v. Canterbury commenced at lLagley Park on Christmas afternoon. The weather was dull but very pleasant, and on tho wholo the conditions were ideal both for players and onlookers, the latter attending in • considerable numbers end contributing ,£122 6s. at tho gates. Prom tho fact that' Wellington batted tl.e' wholo afternoon for 223 it might bo thought play was slow, but it was rather tho good bowling of tho Canterbury men than tho weak batting of their opponents that was responsible for this. If the Northerners' batting was rather slow it was certainly very, solid, and a keen observer would acknowledge them to bo a good batting side. Burton has given several good displays in Christchurch and Thursday's was one of tho best. With few exceptions he played tho bowling with easo and confidence. His play was never slow, and h$ was looking for runs all the time. He went right out to M'Ewin and mado a lot of beautiful drives oft' what would havo been good length balls. On the whole it was a very good and attractivo innings. Condliffe played even sounder cricket than Burton. He played tho "rock" gamo to perfection, and the best of bowling was met with tlio solidest of defence. Ho simply waited for tlio - liitablo ball and then lie punished it for all he was worth, and most of his scoring shots were powerful and woll executed. Of the veteran Wilson it may bo said that "age cannot wither" his. versatile play. He made ouite a number of fine strokes and got M'Ewin round to leg repeatedly, but this eventually cost him his wicket. Baker played-masterlv cricket until an extra good one from Read beat him. M'Girr and Hntchings each got their runs nice batting. Tho Canterbury attack was eurprisinglv good. Eeeso had « good array of boivlers, and ho worked them to goai- -affect. Sandman and Read were the stock trundlers, and they were in their best form. Read only got into tho team through Bennett's withdrawal. Ho sent down a, few fad length balls, but for the most part lie had the batsmen woll under control. Sandman also bowled splendidly, keeping a good length alid frequently giving tho batsmen trouble. M'Ewin was not at his best and seemed unable to get them up. .Thomas was very steady, keeping runs down well, but ho failed to get ft wicket. Reese and Evans wore also in good form, and at no time of play was the bowling "collared." Brunton's work at the wicket was first-class, whilst tho Canterbury fielding was quito up to standard.
