LYALL BAY GALA
MEETING OF COMMITTEES. A meeting was held last night in the Forget-mc-J>ot Hall, Lyall Bay, for the put pose of reporting on the progress mado to date in arrangements tor the Victory Gala and Venetian Carnival, to be heid at Lyall Bay on January. 1. 4 and 3. Mr. T. M. Donovan was in the chair,'and Councillor Frost and Captain Bell were present by Bpecial request. The secretary (Mr. Leslie Jones) said thai arrangements for side shows, a circus, and similar entertainments were being made, and the Wellington Boxing Association had been asked to hold a boxing match. Tho tramways would soil return tickets,- with a coupon, on the cars, the whole costing one shilling, lliis was tho price of a fare both ways from Courtenay Placc and back tor the coupon, which was for the purpose of recording what the buyer thought would bo the number of persoils carried by tho trums on tliß throe days. Ballot-boxes would be placed 011 the beach. It wis proposed to hold ft procession and on tho same day the band contests would take, place. Ilns would be held on either January 1 or 2. Tho prizes for the bands would, be awarded for the highest aggregate points scored for a (juics march ;*nd - waltz. Various amateur athletic, events, a tug-of-war, dancing and musical contests, a treasure hunt, and a baby carnival were on tho programme, The chairmen of various sub-com-mittees made their reports on ffhat progress had been made. Tho chairman remarked that good progress had been made, and if the coming gala were a success, it was proposed to make the event a yearly gathering, covering not three days, but. a whole week. Wellington had suffered in the past from lack of such galas, and it was to be hoped that success would crown their efforts. Councillor Frost was asked to become chairman of the Grounds Committee,.but as-he was leaving Wellington shortly he could not accept. Mr. Wiren was clected chairman of the committee.
Captain Bell spoke with regard to t*uo explosion, and said that the Defenco department would no doubt <lo all it could to assist.
