CHAUTAUQUA. The Chautauqua season in Wellington frill open to-day in tho Concert Chamber with an address of welcomo by Ui« Worship the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke. Concerts will be given both afternoon ind evening by the Lyric Quartet, of Auckland, and as part ot' (lie evening, programme there will b * lecture by the American astronomer! flr. Arthir I). Carpenter, Keports from no north indicate that Chautauqua is presenting an especially strong -programme. Other lectures and concerts wi'l be giv6ir*-each day of the week by different artists. Chautauqua is being introduced in New Zealand by an' association of New Zealand citizens, registered under the Incorporated Societies Act, 190S, and all proceeds go towards the further development of tho movement in Australasia. ■
AMATEUR COMPETITIONS. The management of the Vernon-Spencer Monster Amateur Competitions, which were such a. success when last given, nunounoe another series of competitions to "no held at the Grand Opera' House on Saturday week, December lit. From tho viewpoint of both the audience and tho competitors tho last competitions were decidedly satisfactory. Tho large audiences went away delighted, and all tho competitors received a fair hairing. The next series includes prizes of substantia! vr.luo for the best, child act, also vaudeville it®ns, sentimental (linger, and oemic, the two last-mentioned being open for both Indies and men. Many of tho last competitors have, it is stated, already notified the management of their intuition to again compete. Any competitor who intends enteaing is advised to immediately write to the manager. •
ZEDELER SYMPHONIC QUINTET. Tho Zedoler Symphonic Quintet, of Stockholm, Swcoen, assisted _ by Mws Helen Fortune, soprano soloist, of Chicago, will open a season of two days in ihn Town Hall on Saturday, December C. AccordiiiL' to reports from tho north, this is one of the strongest musical organisations that has ever visited the Dominion. Sueeial attention is called to tho fact that popular prices will prevail. THE LYIUC QUARTET. The famous Lyric Quartet of Auckland. for (seventeen years one of the most popular musical organisations in the north, will make its initial appearance before a 'Wellington audience in the Concert Chamber to-day. Mr. Alan M'Elwain. whose popularity in Wellington as an entertainer is well established, is with the onartet. and will give a number of humorous items. The quartet will be in Wellington for a season of two days onlv. Thursday and Frioay. Concerts wjll be Riven each afternoon at 3 o clock and eveninss at 8 o'clock. The box plan is at the Bristol.
