LAND SETTLEMENT
UTILISING THE WASTE LANDS. By EppMal Correspondent. Palmerston North, December 3. Speaking l at ICairanga on Tuesday nigtlit Mr. Newman referred to the sfforts made by the present Government for the semement of second and third-class lands. lie stated that under tli2 1919 Act areas into 1500 acres of third-class land could bo taken up under license to occupy for a term of ten years, no rent or 1 other charge being made ,by the Government, and tho Government -would make advances b.H way of loan for development and improvement of the land. After sevpn years tihe land might become , the freehold property of the licensee. No local rates would bo charged for tho first four .years. Mr. New-man stated that lie was convinced from personal observation that a large area of waste land of the North Island, if properly managed by the Government, would become a valuable asset to the Dominion and add enormously to the exports of tiic country.
