LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY
A meeting of the Wellington Centre of tho Royal Life-Saving Society was held at the Y.M.C.A. on Tuesday evening, •Mr. G. S. Hill presiding. The newlyformed Swimming and Life-Saving Club at Eastbourne, represented by Mr. J, A. Duffy, applied for and was granted aflilintion to tho centre. Application for an instructor to attend tho Eastbourne Public School for the purpose of instructing school children was granted, Mr. Bird undertaking to do , the work. • Mr. G. S. Hill spoke on the necessity of the society's work in connection with tho police force, suggesting that it should form part of the training in jiolice work. The question ofythe non-activity of lion, instructors was again discusscd, and it was unanimously agreed' that moro stringent regulations governing lion, instructors were required in order to bnsuro that instructors who had received the benefit of tho society's training would continue as acti,ve instructors. Messrs. Duffy, Bell and Bird wore appointed a sub-committee to draw up regulations governing hon. instructors to be submitted to headquarters.
Mr. J. A. Duffy spoke on the question of reconstruction of the society's work, appealing to the affiliated clubs to uso their best endeavours to bring forward candidates for tho society's awards. Tho centre, which is an administrative body, being relieved of that part of tho instructional work would enable it to open up fresh fields.
The question of a separate centre for Palmerston was suggested by Mr. Hill, it being thought that the time was»now ripe for a separate centre.
Tho Dominion executive reported on tho Government grant, explaining tlnft n i.l for .£1 subsidy, i'2Bo in all, would be allowed the Dominion executive, of which this centre would get its '> share. It was therefore resolved that this centre increase its activities in raising subscriptions.
