SPORTS AT NEWTOWN TARK

Labour Day in Wellington was fittingly celebrated by a sports meeting on Sow town Park, which commenced in the late forenoon and was continued until evening. The Large gathering mostly comprised children and ladies. A ccmprohohsivo programme- of sports was gono through, in 'which, races for th<i children predominated, but on account of the defection of many committeemen tho little band of officials who did turn up were greatly overworked, and tho arrangements suffered somewhat in con. sequence. Viewed, however, as an outing for the juveniles tho gathering was a distinct success, and the ideal weather donditions and the pleasant surroundings of the sports ground made thrf day an enjoyable one for their elders. Tho Waterside Workers' Band was m attendance throughout the clay, and under the baton of Conductor Drew rendered a most acceptable* programme of music. A. number of pipers also gave freely of their services. Tho president (Mr. ]?•. J. Ruddell) and tho general secretary (Mr. J. M'Kenzie) were unsparing in their efforts to make things go off with a swing, and in this they were assisted by tho treasurer (Mr. J. nynes), tho director of sports (Mr. T. W. Leslie), tho starter (Mr. J. Cusaclt), the judge of dancing. (Mr. D. M'Phee), and the running judges, Messrs. F. Cornwell, B. Croghen, L. Hennessey, H. Heap, P. O'Neill, R. J. Buddell, C. MTayden, A. W. Croskery, and E. J. Seal. Mesdames Lawlor and Osborno wore also indefatigable _in their. efforts as mombers of tho Children's Committee. Au enjoyablo outing organised by the local branch of tho British 'and Foreign Sailors' Society was held on the Polo Grounds at Miramar yesterday. A largo party of seamen and British and Foreign Sailors' Society mission woflters journeyed by special ear,' leaving tho Post Office Square at 10 a.m. There was no brass band in attendance, but this lack was admirably filled by one of the firemen of the Ajana, who handled a powerful ' accordian with masterly action and provided enjoyable music for tho party. A football match between tho firemen and sailors of the Ajana' created much interest, and at half-time, after a strenuous contest, the former led by 2 to 1. During the second spell tho firemen added another 3 goals to their credit, the' game ending in a victory for them' by 5 to 1. Cricket, rounders, and many other games were indulged in during tho day. Lunch was served at midday nnd ample, justice done to the good tilings provided by the helpers and many, friends of the Mission. In connection with the events for which prizes were given tho following woro the prize-win-ners: Hutting tho Shot: M'Oaffrey (pocket-book). Wheelbarrow Race: Curl and Taylor (fountain pen eaoh). 100 Yards Sprint: Lysaght (fountain pen). Three-legged Raoe: Curl and Kewley (a purse each). "Hunting for a. Wife": Ono of the Amokura boys named Harrison was the fortunate 6uitor and received a prizo of a pocket-book. A tug-'ot-war between the sailors and firemen of the Ajana was easily won by tho fornior. After a hearty tea tho party returned to the Sailors' Rest in the Post Office Square, where festivities woro resumed and much . enjoyment provided with parlour games, singinc, gramophone selections, etc. Before the seamen returned to their vessels supper was served. This was followed by. a short Gospel address ending with the well-known hymn, "Eternal Father Strong to Save." Tho day closed -with cheers from the seamen for the good time given them by the workers and friends of the Mission,

SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY. Labour Day was a bright day for seafarers at tho Sailors' Friend Society, when through, tho kindness of generous supporters a picnic of a most cnjoyablo nature was held. A crowded special car left for KaTori Park, and there lunch and tea were served in delightful surroundings. Games wore indulged in under the guidance of Mr, Moore. mis r sioncr. Tne Amokura crow beat the Japs in tho tug-o'-war event. In /tho evening a concert was given, under tho leadership of tho hostess (Mrs. James Hislop). The performers were:—Mesdames Wyclierley, Child, and J. Lewis, and Misses Violet Mills. Neilson, Bacon, and J. Lewis, and Messrs. Manning, Buckman, members of the Japanese crow, and .Mr. Wright (Amokura). Mrs. Wyclierley was at the piano. Frizes won in tho sports and donated by friends near were handed to tho winners —Messrs. Curric, Uchfda, Fresbo, Morris. Gould, Bouoeman, Andrews, Shimro, Trempwan, M'Arthur, Hamlin, T. Kara, Taakaynnagi Koshi. A hearty voio of thanks was passed by the men.
