NOTES FROM VARIOUS 'CENTRES (From Our Spocial Correspondent!.) WAIRARAPA A section, of ground lias been purchased in Broadway, Carterton, upon which is to be erected an up-to-dato theatre capable of seating 800 persons The plans ■for the building, which is being erected : by.'private enterprise, aro now in the courso' of preparation. A motor garage, to accommodate CO cars, is also to be erected in tho sauio 6treet. A meeting of the council of the Carterton Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday evening, Mr. S. Davies (vice-pre-sident) presiding. The Government analyist's report upon the sample of stone from the property of Mr. D. J. M'Auley, Carrington, stated tlyit the stone was. a limestone similar to that of. Mauriceville, and contained 89 per cont. carbonate of lime. As there was a prospect of a useful industry developing from same, it was resolved to ask the'member for the district to secure a Government expert to report upon, tho quantity available, and the prospects of its development. A requisition on the subject of rating on the unimproved value was received from over a hundred ratepayers, and was ordered to be forwarded to tho Borough Council. It was decided to endeavour to secure Mr. O'Regan to give an address in Carterton on the subject before tho poll is taken. In connection with the new railway, time-table it was resolved to ask Mr. Hornsby, M.P., to ascertain if •the pre-war Wairarapa service was being restored, and if not to endeavour to secure same. The opening of the bowling season in Martinborough took place on Saturday afternoon, when, thcro was a large assemblage.,of bowlers, including visitors from Eeatherston and Greytown. An appropriate speech was delivered by Mr. M. M'Leod (president), and Mrs. M'lecd threw up the first jack, amidst hearty applause, Mrs. Dick being similarly honoured on hoisting the clmb's flag. Mrs. ■Todd was called upon to crack the first ball on the croquet lawn, and was greeted with rounds of applause.

HANAWATU The .Manawatu Golf Club closed its season on Saturday in perfect weather, when, a competition was held in which a large number of members took .part. Competition took the'form of a mixed foursome over 14 holes, in which players were allowed to nso only one club" The winners were Miss Fowler and Miss J. M'Eae. who returned a net score of 57. A driving and •approaolring competition then took place, and was won by Miss Gifford Moore and Mr. Laurence, with Miss Moore's 6ister and P. M'Hardy second. The best scores in the foursome were:—J. The grass courts, of which' tho club has now six were in splendid order, and there ivni a ■ large milliter of visitors present. The club has just received an accession of 35 new members,. bringing tho total number un to 130. Some scratch, games were played, and a very, plwsant afternoon was spent. Mr. H. N. Watson'has presented the club with a silver cup for this year's championshio singles, and Dr. Hooper had made a similar' donation for singles. To .commemorate the names of tho nurses who fell in the war, Sunday being the anniversary of the loss of the hospital ship Marquette with New Zealand Sisters on board, a mast impressive memorial was held at tho Palmer-1 ston ~Opera House on Sunday afternoon. Several returned Sisters were present in uniform, and all nurses and Sisters from local hospitals. The Orpheus Society sang Dudley Buck's "In Momoriam," whilo the Municipnl Band played tho ''Dead March in Saul," tho buglers sounded tho "Last Post," nnd gave a peal of muffled drums. The Eev. H. Blaekbunie delivered an appropriate address, in which he urged better recognition of the services of the nurses and increased pay, with some scheme which should Teliovo these noble-hearted women from any anxioty for tho future when broken down by their arduous work.- ."
