CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKET
By Telegraph-Press Ajsomtion. Christchurch, October 17. Millers are displaying a little concern as to the wheat position, and inquiries have been received locally from the North Island for orders that , can not bo met. The drought in Australia, combined with the certainty that the surplus available for export from tho Commonwealth will be of a negligible quantity, is responsible for the present inquiry.' millers, who havo Imon somewhat dilatory in laying in a supply, are awakening to tho fact that it* is a risky policy to further delay. The spring is sufficiently advanced now to permit of an approximate estimnto of tho harvest position, and it is freely recognised that tho backward weather has seriously diminished sowing operations. As an indication of the diminution oJ the area sown, it may 1m mentioned that 0110 local seed merchant has sold this season about one-third of tho seed wheat he did Inst, and last sea.son's_ sale w.13 about one-half of tho preceding one's. There is practically no change in the oat market. There are inquiries from Auckland, but the lack of shipping prevents operations to any extent. There is inquiry for good oaten-sheaf chair, but very litflo is offering. Sales havo been recorded during tho week at i! 6 ss. per ton. Inferior is not asked for. Tho potato market is. firm, but there is no advance, and offerings are practically nil. Small supplies of Auckland early potatoes will probably ease the Wellington 'demand within a week or two.
