CATTLE BREEDERS
FORMATION OP FEDERATION PROPOSED A meeting of delegates from the various cattle breeders' associations, was held at Palmerston North' to consider the matter of forming a Breeders' Federation, when all breeds were represented' but the Jersey. Preliminary steps Were taken in the same direction some four or five years ago, but owing to the war matters had remained in abeyance. Regret -was expressed that the Jersey breeders had seen fit to hold aloof, and .voire not represented. In the course of a eeneral'discussion it was pointed out that the present arrangements for conducting elud stock sales were anything but satisfactory, and that-jinny animals were offered as studs which were nut no to standard. Several members expressed the opinion that it "was quite time the federation was established to take control of these sales and look after the interests of breeders. One member insisted" that the "scrub" bull was at the root of .the whole question of deterioration of cattle, while others blamed the men :tvho bred such animals, and others the dealers who handled the "scrubs." The fact was referred to that New Zealand had the best climate in the world for brepding stud cattle, and they could lie bred in the open under natural conditions, without, housing. In spite of this
the breeds generally were not improving. strong measures must be taken to eliininntq^from stud ,-herds animal : th'a|t ifaSinot worthy of beimt placed 111 i the* herd book. One reason given for-tlio poor quality, of the offerings at these sales arid the poor prices realised was the fact that most of the _ leading breeders now held their own private auctions, leaving only the smaller man with the poorer classes of cattle to compete at the official stud Bales, It .was
eventually decided, that "a general conference of representatives of all cattlo breeders' associations be held during tlu> Spring Show to further the'interests of tho Cattlo Breeders' Federation and Ijlaco tho federation on a sound footing.; a'lso to endeavour to plnco the pedigree cattlo sales 011 a better basis. Each association will be asked to send tiro delegates to the conference, with definite instructions as to whether they would be in favour of furthering the formation of Ibo federation. It was also agreed to invite pig breeders to he represented.
