THE GROWTH OF GAMBLING. By Telegraph-Press Association. Christchurch, October 14. At the Baptist Union Conference to-day it was reported that the cxecutivo committee had decided to offer the position of union secretary to the present secretary, the Rev. R. S. Gray. Mr. Gray, however, asked for time to consider the matter. Pastor I-ascclles moved that Mr. Gray be asked to accept the position., the matter to bo referred back to the committee; with- power to net. This was carried. It was resolved that next conference be held in Auckland. The Rev. J. J. North was elected union, preacher for next conference, and was also reappointed editor of "The Baptist." The following resolutions were carried :-(l) "That the Baptist Union of New Zealand .regards with apprehension the growth of gambling in this community; ,it looks on last year's totalisator investments, exceeding «£5,000,000, as nothing other t'han a public reproach; the union notices that attempts are being made.to enlarge the facilities for totalisator gambling by increasing the race days and by instituting double totalisators, and by legalising telegraphic investments in the machines; the union believes the attempt ought to be resisted, and 6teps everywhere fo"T)e taken to restrict totalisator gambling." (2) "Tho iluion calls on tho Government to fulfil t'ho intentions of the existing legislation by refusing to allow betting telegrams to go through the telegraph office, and to. put all legal machinery in operation against bookmakers."-

The following resolution. was carried: "This conference is opposed to the proposal to put youths into military training camps for a period.of four mouths, and declares that it will take all lawful means to prevent any 6ueh proposal Incoming law; the union believes that the present Territorial system ought to be reviewed with a view to modification." During the discussion the Territorial and camp system was adversely criticised by some or the delegates, and in the course of a reply to these criticisms, the Rev. R. S. Gray, tho union secretary, said: "I want emphatically to dissent from the statement that the military system made blackguards and larrikins of boys. An officer told me that the language was filthier of those boys who did not attend the camps, but hung around the corners. To say the majority of the officers are not fit to associate with boys is to malign the officers. While I am deeply iu sympathy with the idea of destroying militarism, I. 'hope you will proceed wisely. Sir James Allen is a Christian gentleman, who advocated the bringing of moral influence io bear on tho men. I hope there will be no charges made against men who ore. doing their best. Some of them served us in the greatest crisis in history."
