THE TURF
7~* NOTES AND COMMENTS (By Glencoe.) There will be racing at O'ainiiru tomorrow and l'riday, when the Ivurow Meeting will tako place. Acceptances for the Napier Park Meeting close •. to-night. Acceptances for the Horowhenua Meetin" must lie in the hands of Secretary W. Bull by 8 p.ni.'to-morrow. Mr. A. M'Doniild, owner of Affectation, was taken ill at Wanganui and could not attend .the second day's races. He war, much improved yesterday.
The Avondalc Meeting will be concluded to-day. The first day's dual win ner Signature is ■ again engaged in both jumping events, but his owner will probably only start, him in the Kings'nnd Hurdles, the field for which is not a strong. one.' Amongst the runners in the Nursery Handicap, four furlongs, is the Hasting trained Caricature, who finished in third place in the Avondale Stakes after drawing an outside number at the barrier. The locally-owned Bestir is also an acceptor for thc.'sam.e race, but on Saturday he ran very .green and covered a lot of ground on the turns.
The favourites for the Plunipton Handicap may be Gold Kip and Depredation, both of whom met with ill-fortnne during the running of the Avondale Cup. Gold Kip is a solid little fellow, and is generally better for a race, bnt Depredation may find the distance too short for him. .A'very likely one in the middlo of the handicap is Mill 0' Gowrie, who is left in the race instend of King Lupin, though the latcer ran a sterling race in the Cup. If the mare is better than King Lupin at tho weights she must be very hard to beat. In the possible absence of Signature* the field for the Mount Albort Steeplechase .will not Ire a strong'one, and tho consistent Tenacious may be the best of them.
Form points to Rekanui as the best of those paid up for in the President's Handicap. B. Hannon's maro is very useful over six furlongs. The gallop recorded by Surveyor yesterday, when ho beat Sasanof over seven furlongs will* have the effect of causing him to harden further in the Caulfield Cup market. The Nassau thres-year-old has been the fancy for some time past. An'lndian buyer recently offered 2000 KM. for the Melbourne -Cup winner Nightwatch, but it was turned down, and when asked to put ,a price on the St. Alw.vnno srelding, Mr. C. L. M'Donald named 'tOOOgns.• Prior to the war the Avondate Jockey Glub had plans prepared for a new srraridstand,, which was to cost ,£12,000. The contractor recently informed the committee that the price to-day would he ,£22,000. First .Glance, who visited Martian last season, has a very fine colt foal to the Martairon horse. Th<> Irish-bred mare's first foal is ft 'filly by Calibre which has frown so biff tbnt Mr. ,T. Gricfr lias deoided to let it run out for a year or two. •" i
Owing to one nf his front legs wiving trouble Glendower bns been spelled, and the Glcnapn gelding will not be raced before next Mtlnnui. F. D. Jones went on fmm Orari to Oaroarn with his team. The two-year-old filly Mantua..by Solferino—Rose' Salterne, is to be given'a run in the Trial Plate at the Kui'ow Meeting. . Caveroek broke down on the second dny of the Geraldine Mctini". The trouble appears to be in a shoulder. J RANDWICK TRAINING NOTES. By ToltitraDh-Prois AmnclntJon-Copyriithl Sydney, September -30.
