Moving in the Federal Houso of Representatives tho sscond reading of the Nauru Island Bill, Mr. William Hughes said that Australia's phosphate requirements were 200,000 tons per annum. Tho question of acquiring the interests in tho island had yet to be dealt with. Ho was not prepared to admit that the British Phosphates Company had a title to the deposits. It had been suggested by the company that tho Government should also acquire Ocean Island, which liropofa! ho favoured. Ho concluded that if New Zealand did not accept tho agreement now beforo them, the question of ■iqquiring Ocean Island would be dealt with bv Australia and Great Britain.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
