The Government offices in Pulmerston North, with the exception of the Supreme.Court, and the° banks and leading business places, closed yesterday in our of Dominion Day, but otherwise tho day iras not observed as a holiday. , At the Supremo Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Hosking, a young man named Albert Edward M'Keima came up for sentence on four. charges of theft, to which he hud pleaded guilty in tho Lowor Court. The charges were: Theft of a motor-cycle at Palmerston North, value '£%, 'the property of Herman Wollerman; theft of a motor-cycle at Palnierston -North, value .£lO, the property of A. D. Farraher; theft of a motor-cyclo engine at Pnlinerst'on North,' value the property of C. S. Pees; theft of n motor-cycle nt Palmerstou North, vahte .Jt!3D. - tho property of A. W. Cosslett. His. Honour sentenced the prisoner to be detained for reformative purpose for •'» period not exceeding two years and a half, and would recommend thnt he ho sent to Invercargill. Addressing the prisoner His Honour said: -"You. will ■probably not be detained all that time. The Prisons Board will consider your case at intervals. It is most uiifortu"na.to at your ajo that you should have to go there, but I can't see what else 1 can do. You can spend a little of yon* time there, asking yourself if it is worth while going on like this. If you don't repent. you will be-in piol next time." At the .Foxton Presbyterian Church on Friday evening the Kev. Thomas Halliday was inducted to the pastoral charge of the ciiurch. The Kev. A. Doull, interim Moderator of the charge, presided nnd inducted, tho Itev. Wheeldon, of Shannon, preached tho sermon, and tho Kev. M'Ant addressed the minister and the congregation. The mem hers of the Mnna-watn Himt" held a special run at Kiwitea on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of welcoming home Messrs; T. R. Taylor. N, Short, and G. slT3eth, three members who recently returned from the front. The field was; in c'hanre of the Master (Mr. E. Short), nnd there were about twenty followers. The going was eood and a fast run resulted, with excellent jumping. There was an unusually larce number of spectators. At the conclusion of the hunt the party were entertained by Mrs. Taylor. The Master welcomed the returned soldiers home, and again expressed pleasure at their safe return. Mr. T. R. Taylor, in responding on behalf of himself and Messrs. Short and M'Beth, said that they appreciated the compliment paid them by the club, Nothing could have plensed them better than to nieet many old friends at such a gathering.
