AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
The annual meeting of the Wellington Amateur Photographic Society was held in their club rooms on Wednesday, when an excellent attendance of members, includes 6ome of the founders of the society; now in its eighth year, indicated the great interest being taken in pictorial photography. The report and balance-sheet were read and confirmed, after which Mr. P. N. Denton, president of tho society since its inception, addressed tho meeting. Mr. Denton traced the history of the society, indicating the earlv difficulties experienced, which, now had happily been overcome. In this connection he' specially eulogised the work of Mr. George Oireig, their first (secretary, who had borno the brunt of muck' of their early troubles. He also, with the society's unanimous approval, wished to tender their thanks to Miss Birch and, the Y.W.C.A. authorities for their hearty co-operation in extending their hosnitalily to the society, which has largely contributed to the present successful stato of affairs. Mr. Denton snoko of the set-back to tho society by the influenza epidemic, which for along time, disorganised their meetings, but from which they liad emerged stronger than ever, both financially rnd in regard to their working spirit. Tho handsome credit' balance the year's statement disclosed would do much to improve the apparatus of the club, which during the war period had not grown with the work of tho society. '
An exhibition of photographic work held in tho Art Gallery during tho year had, in spite of handicaps, been successful, and brought forward sorao excellent work, and it was hoped to make this an annual affair.
The society has been appealed-to by the Wellinctou Philosophical Society for asin the collection of photographs of Wellington, past and present, as records for the future, and an evening at an early dale has beon set aside to meet the Philosophical Society to discuss ways and means for the accomplishment of the above obiect. ■ Tho society has recently tiikon part in a. Now Zealand intor-club competition held in Dunediri, the results of which have already been published, Wellington securing third place. The whole of tho competing pictures are now in Wcllintrton. and arrangements are being made for nn exhibition of these, the date of which will'be advertised in a few days. This exhibition will be open to tho miblic without charge. < At the conclusion of Mr. Denton's address, he was nocorded a, vote of thanks by the members, and elected a life-mem-ber of tho society, as was also Mr. Qreig. On tho motion of Mr. Denton, Mr. A. S. Mitchell was elected prcsidont for the ensuing year, Mr. E. B. Woodhead and Miss Humo being elected lion, secretary and treasurer respectively. A strong committee was also formed, and an apneal for members made.
