' . BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS.
London, September 15. Mr. C. A. M'Curdy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Food Ministry, addressing a conference at • Northampton to mark the commencement' of operations under the Profiteering Act, drew attention to tho world-wide existence of profiteering. The Ministry, lie said, intended to begin its investigations at the top, concurrently' with the proceedings against the small man, because the cause of high prices may' bo a powerful trade organisation of which the pu'blic knows nothing. Tho first object must be to protect the pubiio; but tho Government would not hesitate to utilise the Criminal Courts—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
PROFITEERING COMMISSION IN AUSTRALIA. (Rec. September 16, 10.5 p.m.) Melbourne, September 15.. Tho Profiteering Commission' is inquiring into, the price of boots. Evidence was tendered which showed that, the profits, ranged from 27 to 50 per cent., Hie. latter for women's footwear.—Press Assn.
