FOURTH CLASS CHARITY CUP

' - FINAL. South' Wellington and 'i'liorndon melon Kilbirnie Park to play off for the Charity Cup. The teams were evenly matched, and the ground vns, in good condition. South Wellington'kicked off,' and brought play into Thorndon's teiv ritory, but were soon put on the defensive , chiefly' through the splendid kicking of M'Cabe and Hendry. Nickless (Thoriidon), who was playing a great game, at this stage sent in a . hot shot, which was cleared by the South Wellington goal-keeper. Again Tliorndon caiu'e nt it, but Finch got in his kick and sent tho ball over to Nash, .who was tackled by Taylor. Throughout the first spell play was clean and fast, and when the whistle sounded for half-time South Wellington were pressing their opponents, there being no score. On resuming, play was confined to South Wellington's territory for a considerable time, .until Finch relieved 1 his sido with a long kick, the ball travelling -up to [ the Tliorndon territory, where Nasih caine in at a i'nst pace and spoilt, the chance' of a score by being played offside. From the goal-kick J. Hendry received and when within .good scorinj; range was tackled by another player of the same team, the latter spoiling a great chance. Not to be denied, Thorndon camo at it again, and Taylor, receiving the ball, sent on to Wonnicott, who tricked the backs, and coining close up to the" goal - let drive, the ''goalie" saving. Wonnicott rushed upon him before he had time to clear, and by accident the ball slipped from the goalkeeper's hands on to Wonnicott's knee, thus just managing to scrape its way over the line. Tliorndon 1, South Wellington 0. Play was fast, and botii teams lost many good opportunities of scoring. Finch, on two occasions, had bad luck in not scoring for'his side, and on one occasion his kick from half-way went straight for the goal, but Mildenliall, who by the way was playing a great game in goal- for ThornUon, /brought off <1 great save. Having three of tlie opponent.-)'' forwards on ,'liim lie tricked two of them, and found the line in time when Nar»h sent him through the goal. It was a treat io watch the line combination of the South Wellington forwards. The Tliorndon halves, 'though .small, were always on the scene, especially Taylor, who lost 110 opportunity. The splendid play of M'Cabe and- Hendry at back could not lie denied. Tliorndon were obliged to play a fifth-class back, as their prominent full-back, Cording, was absent owing to illness.- 'I'he most prominent player in the South Wellington ranks was Finch. Na'li, another player of tlio same team, was the licit wing of the day, and had the halves fed him more it would have been hard to judge'which of the two teams would have held the cup. At the call of time play was confined to uiidiield. and Tliorndon won a, meritorious victory by one goal to nil, thus obtaining the cun for one yei'.r.
