INSTITUTE DEFEAT THISTLE
■ Institute and Thistle met in the first round of the Charily Cup at Seatoun I'ark, iilie result being an easy win for Institute by three goals tu one. Institute were without tile .services of Lambert and lfalley, their places being taken by M'Kinley and Ross, the latter donning the colours at a moment's notice, wliile, Thistio were represented by a strong eleven, Ross set the ball in molion, progress being made by Porter ajvl Smith, but they were sent back . by M'Arthur. Edwards now had a. look in, his centre being cleared by Bell. Houston, securing, tricked Bradbury, and sent on to M'Kinley, whoso shot went over. From the kick-off Bradbury let Smith away; the latter transferred to Bell, of Thistle, only to be dispossessed by his namesako of Institute, lioss secured and swung the ball out to Smith, who' (misprinted M'Arthur, Egerton clearing his centre. Brownlee (whomado a welcoiuo reappearance in the Thistle ranks, having just returned from service) let Edwards away, but M'Arthur (Institute) frustrated his attempt to centre. Thistle enme on again, M'Gorau sending on to Johnstone, who tested Tarrant, the latter saving well. M'Girr, who was in splendid form, sent his forwards ahead, and Houston, dodging Brad' bury, let M'Kinlny away, but M'Kenzie saved th© situation with ii hclty kick. Bell (Thistle) next sent in a lovely ceil-, tre, AVauden just clearing in the .nick of time.. Edwards' was next prominent with a good try at goal. Tarrant again being equal to the occasion. Ihe Institute forwards kept playing the ball to their right wing, where Porter and J. Smith were in splendid form, the latter repeatedly beating M'Arthur in the sprint for the ball, and sending in some accurate centres. Egerton, however, was playing a. safe game in goal. Ho was neatly beaten on ono occasion, Ross sending in a screw shot, wliich just missed the post by inches. Thistle were greatly handicapped at this stage, through losing the services of Edwards, their most dangerous forward, who was injured. Despite this handicap, Thistle continued to hold their own, Tarrant being called upon to handle on various occasions, and one shot from Johnstone narrowly missed the post. The Institute defence were playing splendidly, especially their halves, who were putting in a lot of useful work. Neither 6ide was able to gain an advantage during the first spell, the whistle sounding without a scoro being registered. The second half was full of exciting incidents, tlhe. ploy being very fast right.i from the . kick-off. After about fifteen minutes' play Brownlee, who had hecn playing""a,good game, dribbled past three opponents and slipped oh to Johnstone, who scored. Thistle I, Institute O.'From this stage onwards Institute had matters practically their own way. Their forwards swooped down on .the Thistle defonce, whore one,of the defenders handled just outside tho penalty area. Ross took the kick, and beat Egerton. with a fast rising shot. Tho goal was disallowed,'which is in contradiction to the rules, as «, goal'can be scored direct, from a free-kick-, for hands. Nothing daunted, Institute continued to,press, and Porter sent in a stinging shot, which. struck M'Arthur on the hand, inside the penalty area. The referee awarded a ponalty, from which Bell scored with a fast low shot. Thistle 1, Institute -1. Misfortune ~ further befel Thistle," M'Kenzio ihurting his ankle and being compelled to rotiro. Playing with nine men, Thistle tried hard to stave 1 off the Institute forwards, They naturally played tho one-back, game, but the Institute forwards swung tho ball about from wing to wing, which necessitated _ one'of filio Thistle halves chasing the icing-forward, which, of course, put the remaining Institute forwards onside. .Institute very soon increased their score, J.Jsmitlli sending in an ideal centre, which Houston netted. Institute 2. Thistle 1. Institute wero- now all over Thistle, l'orier and Houston delighting with some nice touches. M'Girr came near increasing their leiyl wit' l -a splendid solo effort. He beat M'Arthur, but kicked tile ball too far ahead, Egerton,. rushing out, •.cleared. Institute came again, and Ross, seouring, slipped on to J. Smith, who sent in a splendid shot, which was equally well saved, by Egerton. Houston, however, caught the ball on the rebound, and netted. Institute 3, Thistle 1. Play continued in the Thistle territory right on to the call of time ■ without any additional score, although Houston almost tdded another goal, M'Arlihur heading clear oh the goal-line. >.
