CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
4 TOURNAMENTS. TO BE REVIVED. Tho history' of chess championship tournaments in New Zealand goes back to 1879, when Mr. Henry ' Hookham, of Christcliureh, had tho honour of being <jhe first .ehoss champion. Sinoo that date tournaments were , held regularly ua'il the Christmas holidays of 1911-15, when Mr; F. K. Kelliug, of Wellington, • secured the championship. Owing to the war the tournaments were abandoned, v and Mr.' Kellin'g's hold of»the championship expired automatically on December 31, 1915. Tho tournaments aro now to be revived, and .during tho .coming Christmas holidays 'the loading chess playors of New Zealand will congregate in Wellington and strugglo for the championship. At the quarterly meeting of tho Wellington Chess Club, held last evening, with Mr. H. L. James in the chair, the secretary of the club, Mr. J. G. Tv\ Dalrymple, tendered his resignation, as he is proceeding to Australia on an extended business visit. Mr. Dalrymnlo has carried out the secretarial dunes with complete satisfaction to lihe nienihers of tho olub, and the fact was freely acknowledged at the meeting last . evening. There will' bo a lot of-work to bo attended to during .the next three months preparing for the tournament; and the club has. been fortunate in securing the services of Mr. C, W. Tanner, who was the secretary of the, club in 1903, when mainly through his energy the toumamerfb of that year was a great success. Mr. Tanner was thily appointed last evening to succeed Mr. Dalfyuiple.
