Senator Knox, in the-Senate, advocated a separate' peace with Germany, owing to the fact that the Versailles Conference had imposed harsh and cruel terms on Germany. The United State} ought to renounce all claims to an indemnity. The Senate Foreign delations Committee adopted an amendment to the Peace Treaty providing for the representation of the United States on equality with Britain at the Peace Council.—Aus.-N.Z. August 31, 11.55 p.m.) Washington, August 30; Mr. Samuel Gompers (president of the American Federation of Labour) made a statement that the Treaty, including the Covenant, should be adopted unamended without delay. India, Ukrainia, Esthonia, and Livonia, through representatives, have presented claims for self-government to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. Cable Assn. THE AUSTRIAN TREATY DELAY CAUSING DISSATISFACTION. (Rec. August 31, 5.5 p.m.) Rome, August 30. The delay in concluding peace with Austria, is causing widespread dissatisfaction. Public opinion attributes the delay to France's alleged intrigues to form a new confederation of Danube Slates with Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, Jugo-Slavia, and .possibly 'Rumania, Bulgaria, and Poland, as a-counterpoise to German expansion.—Aus.-N.Z. Colonel House, in an interview, said he was perfectly- willing to sign the Austrian Treaty, but could not, as requested, promise r.j> far ahead whotlier he would be able to be in Paris when the treaty wa«i ready for signature. Colonel Htkise declined to state whothev lie had a difference of opinion with President Wilson regarding Shantung.
