TANKS IN BATTLE
COMRED A FAILURE BY WAR OFFICE
BIG CONSTRUCTION.ORDER CANCELLED (Rec. August 30, 5.5 pirn.) London, August 29. Sir Albert Stern, Director of Tank Supply Department in 1916, in an article in the_ "Strand Magazine," states that after tho tanks were first used,in battle Marshal Haig instructed him to make as many as possible. One thousand were ordered, but tho War Office cancelled the orde: and continued to oppose the construction of tanks. Mr. Churchill, the th-n Minister of Munitions, said the War Office considered them a total failure and uropotsed to stop further construction. Mr. Churchill, on the advice of War Office experts, requested Sir Albert Stern to resign, but the latter refused and was superseded. The new .weapon got "a fair chance, again when Lord, Milner became Minister and Sir Henry Wilson Chief of the Imperial General Staff.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
