4 —. — — FIVE WEEKS' GRANTS, £1288. At'the monthly meeting of the Hos pital and Charitablo Aid Board, the social Welfare Committoe submitted the following report to the bonxd:— "That a notification having been ceived . from the Department. of Public Health that the amounts of certau "rants made by the committee and claimId for from the Department were -in ex cess of the .limit authorised inasmuch ai the amount of the ordinary widows .pensions had not been deducted fromi th< maximum sum mentioned by the Miiuster viz., 255. for tho widow and 10s. 6d each for the children as was w-tended the committee waited upon .the Hon. tn< Minister 'for Public Health. "The committee pointed out to tni Minister that the instructions of I'el> TuaiT 8 contained, no reference to an} deduction from the sums fixed ae maxima (as given above), and asked foa reconsideration in order to avoid ttu necessity of reducing tho grants in ques Minister admitted that the pre sent position was the result of a mwun derstanding, but expressed his inability t make 'W alteration, tt'iJl! cer ture, to tho original scheme, Which Mr tainly was based on. the deduction of thi 'widows' pension from the maximum al lcmanco of 255. and 10s.- 6d. for th widow and each child respectively. "During the month of July four hot applications were received and dealt witl Ails one case terminated.
