Tho will of the late Mr. Peter Smeaton, formerly of Sargood, Son and Ewen, who died this week, provides for bequests or i'lOtiO and. all the net; income thereirom, for ten ycai's, for Hie benefit of Is ow Zealand soldiers engaged in tho recent war, JI2OO to annuities and the lown■Planning -Society,\.£l6oo to the Otago University, payable on the death of a legatee, thMncome to be used for a research'scholarship in science. An additional provisional bequest to the University will, it is hoped, bring the total sum to .£SOOO for scientific research. The sum of .£IOOO is to he invested and tho income paid to the Dunedin Art Gallery Society for the purchase of oil ana water-colour paintings.
