SHIPPING SPACE

PROSPECTS ARE GOOD. -The requirements- of the-'frozen meal 1 industry in the.matter of'"shipping were referred ■to iii the House:'of Representa- . ti'ves yesterday. '' Mr. G. V". 1 ' l'earce_ asked" the Prime Minister whether lie-siad seen the cablegram appearing in the-morning papers to the elfect that-the statement had been made by a Ministei; in Australia that shipping space for 4,125,000 carcasses of frozen' meal would bo- available in a period of three months., Mr. l'earce said that this would lie sufficient shipping to clear the stores in Australia. Would Ihere'lJe a' like quantity of'ship? ping for the. New Zealand, meat? Mr. Pearce alk asked the Prime Minister to cable to Britain for information as to tho amount of meat in the cold stores there, and as to the time of expiry of tile contracts with' America, and Argentina for Supplies of meat. ' . - Jlr. Massey said that the quantity of meat in the cold stores in Britain was on a recent date 58,000 tons, not including bacon, poultry, and such meats. The total capacity of tho cold stores of tho Unite.d Kingdom was 200,000 tons. As to: the shipping to be available, he hoped that there would be sufficient shipping available by- the third week in October to lift from this- country 3,143,000- carcasses. -. It was expected that by the end of December tMre would be four million carcasses of meat in the stores. It was estimated on the experience of . past seasons, that by the end of the season on June 30 tliero would have -come into the .stores'six'and. a-half million "mora&arcasses. To have the stores cleared by the end. of the following December would mean that they , would hava to ship ten aud a-lialf million carcasses. This was a very large order, and he did not know-whether,-it was possible, but he. did--think, that'-we-should get . away so -much of. the meat that when the now season opened without the com-manded-there should be li'o difficulty inyetting some arrangement with the Imperial Government by which some of our meat should lie shipped before' all the imperfal meat-was sent out of the country. Ho was encouraged to hope for: this . in view of the very -friendly relations that had existed between New Zealand and the Mother Country in regard to all these transactions.
