SIR HARRY CHAUVEL
CAVALEY LEADEE RETURNING. Advice has been received in Melbourne that Lieut-General Sir Harry Chauvel, 1C.C.8., K.C.M.G., is returning Australia on tho 8,«. Demosthenes, which left England on July 20. Recognised as being one of the most brilliant cavalry leaders of the war, Liout.-General Chnuvel's career since he left Australia as officer commanding tho Ist Light Horso Brigade has been notable, says the Melbourne "Argus." In addition to tho lionours of 1C.C.8., K.C.M.G., ho received from the French Government tho Croix do Guerre, an<l from the Sultan of Egypt the Order of the Nile, 2nd class. He was also mentioned iii dispatches more often than any other Australian general. At Gtalllinoli Lieut.-Gonerol Chauvel for a time commanded tho New Zealand and Australian Division, ill tho absence of tho general oliicer commanding. On returning to Egypt after the evacuation he was appointed to command the Anzac Mounted Division. His outstanding ability soon won the admiration of General Sir Edmund Allenby; himself a noted cavalry .leader, who secured for liini the command of the Desert Mounted Column, comprising Light Horse troops, English Yeomanry, and many other British and Australian units. On August 2, 1917, he was promoted to his present rank. When it was announced in April that Lieut-General Sir C. B. 13. White and Lieut-General Sir llarry, Chauvel would shortly return to Australia, it was intimated in the "Argus" that one of these officers would probably bo appointed in-spector-general ol' tho forces, and the other chief of (lie general staff. _ It i 3 now thought that General White will succeed Major-General Leggo as chief of tho general staff, and that General Chauvel will bo offered tho position of inspec-tor-general. When war broke out General Chauvel was on his way to London to assume the position of Commonwealth representative on tho Imperial General Staff. Previously he had held many important posts in the permanent military forces, and from October 10, 1911, until January 81, 1914, ho was adjutant-general. Bom on April 6, 1865, his first appointment to commissioned rank vfas on September 9, 1896. He was appointed lieutenantcolonel in 1009, and full colonel four years later.
