SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL
FOR BROOKLYN. Messrs. D. S. Hood and F. R. Lightfoot, representing the returned (soldiers of Brooklyn, waited on .the Reserves Committee of the City Council yesterday afternoon, with the request that the apex of, Sugarloaf Hill (situated in a reserve originally given by a Mr. Todman at the time the Fitcliett Estate was cut up), now occupied ■by ft flagstaff, should be granted them as a site for the erection of' a fitting memorial to their comrades from the district who had fallen in the war. The site was very suitable, as not only would the 'monument be seen from Brooklyn, but from Wellington, and even from Petone on a clear day. Tbe'y proposed to collect the money for tho memorial by donations, and .bom the. proceeds of socials and dances to be held in the district. They already had _.£S 6s. in hand as the result of one social, and had sufficient monev to finance four more socials. Ho could' not say exactly what form the memorial would take. The more money that was raised the more substantial the monument would be. They had roughly sketched an obelisk 35ft. in .height, standing on a four-stepped base of concrete, with places for marble panels ou which the names of the fallen would be inscribed. . • Councillor G. F.rost (chairman) said that the representations would be given every - consideration by tho committee, and he thought he could say that the committee would do its best to get tho consent of tho council to, the scheme. It. was certainly it ; prominent snot," and ho' thought that the flagstaff could well give way in a matter of this kind. He did not think the deputation need anticipate any obstacles to their wishes.
