LEAGUE FOOTBALL
AUSTRALIA v. NEW ZEALAND. Considerable interest, attaches to the meeting of tho Australian and Now land League teams, which aro to meet on tho Basin Reserve on Saturday. The Australian team left Sydney by the 6tcnmer Essex and should reach Wellington to-day. The whole of the mombora of the Now Zoaland team are at present in Wellington, and they were out on Kelburn Park yesterday morning doing practice work. Thoro are 6ix Queensland reps, in the Australian team, this no doubt boiug tho result of tho two matches played rocontly in Sydney between the two States and also the result of tho great strides tho Queensland League'has made of recent years. Talcing tho New South Wales players first. Tlio backs are said to bo a line set, and the most prominent among them are H. Horder, L. Cubitt, R. Ntorman, A. Halloway, Gilbert, and Johnson.
H. Hoarder (South Sydney) has been seen in New Zealand on a previous occasion. He is said to be right _at tho top of his form, and his lightning runs and side-stepping the delight of Sydneyitos. L. Cubitt (Eastorn Suburbs), threequarter, next to Border is considered the most brilliant back at tlio present time. He is very fast and is described as great in both attack and defence. Border, Cubiti;, Norman and Conaghan make a formidable throe-quarter line, the combination being an excellent one. R. Norman (Eastern Suburbs) is *dosewbed as one of the most dangerous backs in tho team. His defensive work is said to bo particularly brilliant. P. Conaghan (Balmain) is one of wo latest playors in Sydney to reach international honours. Ho is a young and brilliant player. . Halloway (Balmain) and Johnson are Raid to to a pair of ideal half-backs. Both of these pla.ycw gave great exhibitions against tlio New Zealand reps, during the recent tour. Gilbert and Eraser are well-known to Leagueites, both being playems of standing and reputation. Gilbert, it will bo remembered, had to his credit a brilliant record in the Old Country. Tho New South Wales forwards-Pren-tice, Sehultz, Ryan, Oxford, Burge, Latta, ICerrick, and Watkins are a tine oven lot and combine well; The first six competed against the recent • Now Zealand team. Oxford is aym fine placo kick. The majority of the forwards are now to the Dominion, but Watkins and Burge are old acquaintances. Watkins is an old hand and 19 not long returned from the front. _ Sweeney (full-back) is a good kick, and verv sure in defence. Thompson (half-back), was captain of tho Queensland rep. team this year, is claimed to bo one of the most brilliant players in League circles. Thompson was unfortunate enough to bo shot through tlio lungs in tho late war, but his play i 6 said to be remarliW". Paten, three-quarter (Ipswich), and C. Thorogood, live-eighth (Brisbane), are fast and brilliant in attack and def°aeb'Donnoll and N. Potter (Brisbane) are two very fine forwards who troubled the New Zealand team greatly in their test matches at Brisbane. 0 Donnell is a "hooker" of the first water, and no doubt it is principally on this account that he has won, his place in tho team. Potter's work is also brilliant, he being ono of those fast and hard-worfang typa w'ho aro always with the ball from start to finish.
