COAL OUTPUT
LESS THAN LAST YEAR. Some figures relating to the conl production of the New Zealand mines wore given to a reporter yesterday by tho Hon. A. M. Myers, Minister in Charge of Conl Distribution. Mr. Myers said that, his Department obtains monthly particulars of output from the principal mines, and the figures now to hand show that the output from these mines for .Tilly last was 138,240 •tons. The output from the same mines for July, 1918, was 180,118, so tllnt there was a decrease in production from the collieries referred to during July of'this year compared with July last year, of 41,878 tons. The importations for last month totalled 31,715 tons, as against 2-1,727 tons imported during July, 1918. The increase of 0988 tons in importations makes the net reduction in supplies from both sources for the month of July 1919, as compared- with tho same month for last year, 34,890 tons. The output from the principal West Coast min«6 was 78,231 tons last month, as against 93,5.17 for July, 1918. This a'reduced output of hard coal when compared with July, 1918, of 15,300 tons.
Asked as to t.he quantity of coal actually received by. the Railway Department during the month of July, Mr. Mvers stated that figures to hand show tluit this was 18.059 tons, which includes brown coal and lignite from Taupiri and other mines.
