AMERICAN NATIONAL DOUBLES
PATTERSON AND BROOKES A BRILLIANT PAIR, (Rec. August 14, 5.5 p.m.) New York, August 12. The "Times" Boston correspondent, commenting on the second round of tho National Doubles Tennis Championship, played on August 12—in which Patterson and Brookes. (Australia) defeated Williams and Washburn (America), and Alexander and Vbshell (America) defeat ocl Lycett and Thomas (Australia)— brought out tho fact, that Patterson, who is one of the most brilliant players seen on American courts, needs sieadiness, and that Brookes makes his game in the doubles effective. Brookes remained cool and calculating under all circumstances, often mailing phenomenal recoveries. Both men played fast and brilliant tennis. They met a strong though ineffective opposition. Tho opponents of Lycett and Thomas gave them tho hardest play of their lives. Tho Australians wero completely outplayed by Alexander and Voshell in two of the fivo sets.-- The Americans found Thomas's service excessively hard to handle—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
