"PUSH ON!"
WITH jHYDKO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.
There is scarcely a meeting of a local body held but at which somo reference to the Mangaliao hydro-electric schemo is made. The coal shortage, and its consequence, 1 the railway ' "cut," lias made it clear to everyone that reliance am not be placed on our coal supplies, and every local l>ody and Chamber of Commerce can only see salvation in the consummation of the long-deferred hydro-elecbrio soheme, which has been promised the distriot by tho Government for two years past, and is 6till years off completion. _ _ Among the matters for discussion at yesterday's meeting of tho Central Chamber of Commerce was the following:— "Mtuigahao Hydro-Electric Power League desires looal bodies to at onco consider question 'of reticulation of power. Advises that the Vigilance Committeo had arranged for a monthly report on progress of work at Mangahao with a view to insisting that work bo pressed forward as fast as possible." The chairman (Mr. C. M. Luke) said that they must push on with tho work, and ono way of doing it was to get on with the reticulation work in connection with tho schorne so as to be ready when the Government sent the juico along. He noticed tlint Christchurch proposed to spend another ,£150,000 in extending the system already in operation, which ho thought was the strongest argument in favour of pushing on in every way with our own hydro-electric scheme, • The meeting approved tho proposal that tho (luestion of the reticulation of .power sliiould bo considered.
