The following js a statement of the disbursement of patriotic moneys by tho Manawatu Patriotic Society for Juno and July:—.Tune: Belief for soldiers, £{a&; relief of dependants, JJB3 Ids. Consideration was given at tho monthly meeting of the Palinerston North branch of" tho Farmers' "Union to tho following remit from Tialcitahuna: "In view o_f tho fact'that a big scheme for banking tho southern sido of the Manaivatu Elver from Linton to Shannon is under consideration that a scheme should be formulated to either straighten the river or out a channel from near Longburn to Foxton. This would eliminate the necessity and expense of banking both sides of the river, as settlers on the northern side Tvoro certain to ercct a bank to counteract tho cffect of _ the scliomo nuw in progress. Jn tho opinion of this branch tho banking of the river will necessarily raiso tho bed, and so forco upon tho settlers the continuous expense of enlarging both batiks year after year." The meeting resolved to ask the Public AVorks Department to supply particulars of the scheme prepared by Mr, Hay about 1-1 years previously. At the monthly meeting of tho Pohanjjina County Council, tho Valuation Department wrote advising that a sitting of tho Assessment Court would bo necessary for tlio purpose! of hearing objections to valuations in the County of Pnhangina. It was proposed to hold tho Court in the council's offices, probably about the first week in September. Mr", if. A. IT. Port was appoiiiled assessor for the county.
