Mr. V. Sanderson, Inspector of Factories at Dunediu, has been transferred to Masterton, whero ho is duo to arrive shortly. Mr. llall, headmaster of tho Nireaha School, has been transferred to Masterton School and takes up his duties next week.
The weekly meeting of tho Claims Board of the Wairarapa Patriotic Association was held in Masterton yesterday, Mr. Hugh Morrison presiding. Six applications for loans were received, fivo of which were granted, aggregating One applicant wns referred to the Repatriation Department. Thirteen claims for temporary relief were dealt with. Mr. T. F. Watson presided at a tea held in tho Y.M.C.A. Rooms on Sunday evening to welcome home Mr. and Mrs. S. V. Pursonson, who had been engaged in Y.M.C.A. woik abroad. Speeches wero delivered by the Rev. J. Cocker, Dr. Prior, Messrs. C. E. Daniell, If. Daniell, Ross, G. R. Sykes, M.P., and Mrs. J. M. Coradine, whoso eulogistic remarks were suitably replied to by the guests. A youth named Walter Corlett wns arrested in Masterton on Saturday for attempting to obtain goods by false pretences. The method employed was na ingenious as it was daring. Several firms were rung up per telephone and wero given orders in the names of certain well-known sotders, i with instructions that the articles, which included shirts, fancy sockff handkerchiefs, flhd cartridges, were to be delivered to various places. The orders were delivered as requested and wero picked tip by Corlett. One firm, however, was rung np a second time, as the goods had not-been delivered as expeditiously as they might have been. The manager became suspicious, with ' the result that tho police wero informed, and Corlett, who is employed by a racing 6tftble, nnd is only fifteen years of age, wns traced nnd arrested. He appeared yesterday morning before the Juvenile Court and pleaded guilty. Mr. S. j L P Free, S.M., said ho did not wish Ito send the lad to gaol. Accused would ibe admitted to probation for twelve ! months, on condition that he found work ! in the country and kept away from towns, I races, and racing stables. ' A meeting was held in the Masterton i Firo Brigade station last night to dei cide whether it would be possible to send ! an invitation to the United District l*iro i Brigades' Association to hold tho next United Firo Brigades' demonstrations and conferenco in Masterton. Mr. W. 11. Jackson, who presided, said that about J2OO would bo required to provide prizes, etc. It wouid bo well for them to kuow what liabilities would bo incurred before they launched any scheme. Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.l'., thought tho scheme, was worthy of their support. Fire fighters deserved all that could be done for them. The movement would have his support, and he considered the scheme would boost Masterton and encourage people to come here, 110 moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr. Tooinath: "That an invitation be sent i to the United l'ire Brigades' Association 'to hold its next conference and demonj titration in Masterton." Air. E. O. Eton, | in speaking to the motion, f-aid that it ! was some time since thero was a demonstration in Masterton, but ho hoped it. j would be held hero again. The Fire Bri-1 gado was an institution that deserved] ! their support, and he would have much | pleasure in doing anything possible.to ' further tho movement. Other speakers spoke enthusiastically of the project, and promised to work for its realisation. The motion was carried unanimously, and tho following committees were appointed:— Finance: Messrs. E. G. Eton, H. Russell, 'I'. J. Thompson, Gumming, W. Candy, C. E. Daniell, G. R. Sykes, M.l'., Evans, and 0. C. Pragnoll. Accommodation: Messrs. Toomath, Cole, Russell, Bradbury, O'Regan, Superintendent Freeman, A. W. Chapman, Braggins, T. Jenkins, Lewis. Tho Ground Committee is to be elected by the Fire Brigade. Entertainment Committee: Messrs. Temple, Travel's, Arthur, Naylor, Miller, Fenton, Lamb, J'. Candy, J. Jago, F. J. Ilunn, Deputy Jenkins, W. Iggulden, and two band conductors. An executive committee, to consist of the of the various committees, together with the chairman, Mr. W. H. Jackson and Superintendent Freeman. Mr. B. Chap- , man was elected secretary, and Mr. W. ; 11. Jackson treasurer. A voto of thanks was passed to the chairman, Mr. W. 11. Jackson.
The following soldiers returned to Masterton vesterdny and were given tho usual civic reception, speeches being delivered at (lie Post Office by Mr. W. ]I. Jackson, Mayor, and Mr. S. L.
