THE AFGHAN PEACE DELEGATION
SERIES OF PLEAS
NOT UNDERSTOOD
By Telegraph-Press AfisociationvOopyriEht. Simla, August 1. The president of tho Afghan peace delegates, replying to Sir Hamilton. Grant, stressed the fact that Afghanistan was Jinn in its friendship with Britain, and lnid never violated, it. It protested when tho British Government refused to allow tribes to bo placed tmdc-r Afghan rule, and later, during tho European War, the anxiety of the Afghans regarding tho safety of the Holy places cii islam had made them feel hopeless. The introduction of martial, law and other legislative measures caused disturbances and excitod. tho Afghans, and this led to tho posting of troops- on tho frontiers, with tiio result that there wero misunderstandings on both sidos. Tho reason lor bioooshed amongst tho tribes was that each party considered its religion was true, and attempted to destroy tne other, deferring to the rcccnt troubles in the Islamic world, he said that with international relations expanding on all sides, how could Afghanistan remain content to bo confined to its jiiiiiteil freedom? The hearts of all tho Islamic. peoples had gone out to Turkey, and tho Sultan's' Jehad had affected tho hearts of all Afghans'. If the European War. had ended before iho assassination of tho Amir, a temporary disturbance like the present Afghan war would not have occurred. .Tho feelings of tho Afghans had long been kept under, but when voices were raised in India tho Afghans, who always eympathisod witli tho Indians, could not suppress thoir feelings. The Amir had openly agreed with: his people, but secretly, and by strategy, tried to keep thom quiet; he meant to introduce.reforms, 'but mistakes made by' officers on both sides brought about un. unexpected state of affairs. Tho delegate assured the British, Government that tho Afghans wore anxious for a renewal of the friendship, and for its permanent endurance,—Eeuter.
