ALSACE-LORRAINE CENSUS
FRENCH ANCESTRY OP THIS INHABITANTS. Soon after Alsace and Lorraine- were occupied by the trench, iv census of tho inhabitants- was taken, wliicn at the same time showed how much French blood there was -in every one of tho inhabitants inscribed on the register. Inhabitants of French nationality, and thosa who could trace back their French ancestry to before 1840, received Card A: those _ who ; wore descendants of a mixed marriage (i.e., Alsatian or Lorrainer. and German), Card B; inhabitants of Allied or neutral nationality, , Card C: and German immigrants, Card D. The relative result obtained by this form ol classification is as follows:—
Card A—s9 per cent, Cord B—lo per oont,. \ Card C—3 per cent.
Card 1)—28 per cent. It will only be'possible to take a complete census of the population of Alsace and Lorraine when tho migratory movement resulting from the war has comp to an end. But judging from the census of 1910, the lat-eet in existence, it is estimated that the respective numbers of inhabitants in eacli of the above four categories are 1,082,650, 183,500, 55,050, 513,800, giving a total of 1,835,000. Thus;-tho number of German immigrants who have been established in Alsace and Lorraino since 1871 is greater than the figure given up to the present (about 480,000). js'evertheless, many Germans have left -Alsace and Lorraine since tho' signature of the armistice, and a cortain number of German "undesirables" have been obliged to leave.
