Tho annual meeting of the Palmcrston North Y.W.C.A. took place this week. In presenting the annual report and bal-ano-sheet tho chairman Mr. H. F. Gibbons) stated that although a small deficit (,£l6) wa6 shown on the year's working, tho hostel had more than justified itself, and had fulfilled a great need in the community, • The annual report, which was adonteu, mentioned that applications for admittance were constantly being refused, as 36 was its utmost capacity. In order to bring the charges more into lino with those of other Y.W.C.A. hostels in the Dominion, the executive was reoomended to slightly increaso tho boarding fee. The election of officers and board of control resulted in the re-elec-tion of thoso who had filled the various offices last year. Mr. W. J. Rutherford, of tho lcgitf firm of Cooper .and Rutherford, Palmerstou North, who received his discharge from tho New Zealand Forcos in England, after three years' active service, is duo back in Palmorston North this week from America. At the annual meeting of tho Manawatu Patriotic Society, which was held at Palmorston on Thursday, it was reported that the society had a credit balnnco of .£68,486 Bs. sd. Tho society wasthus practically onabled to carry on out of tho interest earned by its investments. Stress was laid upon tho fact that virtually every penny the society held on trust could l)o liquidated at a moment's notice. The report and balance-sheet wero adopted after a short discussion, and tho following officers elected:—Treasurer, Mr. James Blackwood (re-elected); executive, Messrs. N. Bhtcknrore, M. Cohen, F. n. Cook, T. E. French, A. J. Graham, T. R. llodder, A. Hannay, ,T. M. Johnston, J. Linklator, 0. Monrad, J. Strang J. H. Stevens, A. Matliicson. A. ]'. M'Jlardy, 11. Alrara. P. C. Fiv.e'th, R, S. Abraham, J. A. M'Leavoy, J. Murray, D. P. Jones, B. J. Jaco'iw, and S. R, Lancaster. The chairmanship is tr.kon bv tho Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.) anil tho position of secretary by. Mr. J. Permain. A resolution was carried urging the Government to set up a special department to deal with all applications from returned soldiers for the purchase of homes. It was pointed out that on account of tho insufficient staffing of tho Lands Department, a dolay of two months often ensued at the present time before an application was dealt with.
