NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (Special Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA A case of interest to, auctioneers and farmers alike, was heard at the Magistrate's Court at Masterlon on I'riday, when Jeremiah Savage, of Masterton, farmer, proceeded against the Wnirarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association for tho sum of iCS'J 10s. 3d., being balance of purchase money duo on a sheep deal. Tho gallery was occupied by many prominent local auctioneers and farmers. The statement of claim set out that about January 10 plaintiff entered into a.wjitten'contract for the sale to tho W.P.C.A. (as agents) of 820 wethers at 275. Cd. per hoad. The wethers were delivered to defendant's agent, S. V. Kodney. The total prico ot the wethers at 275. Gd. per head was ,£1127 10s.. less commission 528 Ss. lid. Of the remaining sum of ,£1039 fis. 3d. defendants had paid .£1039 75., and it was for tho balance, ,£59 19s. 3d., that Savage claimed. The defenco was that a mistake had been made, when the contract was drawn up, in that tho prico of the wethers should havo been 265. per head, instead of 275. Gd., as appeared in the typewritten copy of tho contract. Mr. L. L. Free. S.M., agreed to adjourn the case to allow the defendant to apply for a removal of the action to tho Supremo Court. Costs_were allowed the olaintiff. Mr. ]). JC. Logan nppeared -for the plaintiff, and Mr, G. H. Smith for tho defendant.Mr. K. A. Godsland, of the Bristol and Dominions' Producers' Association, Bristol, recently delivered an interesting addrees to a meeting of farmers at Masterton, on tho position of tho meat industry in England and the prospects for. the disposal of the New Zealand output. At tho conclusion of tho address the meeting promised'their unanimous support to the association (which is a result of the activities of the New Zealand Farmers', .Union) when tho Government control should bo lifted. It is understood that the Government has been in negotiation with a number of landowners in the Masterton electorate for the purchase of their estates for sol-dier-6ettlement, but tho prices asked have 'jeen considered prohibitive. . Mr. D. Boss, of Martinborough, has disposed of his property of to Mr. L. Haycock. Negotiations are in progress for tho cutting up and selling of a portion of a well-known Gladstone property. One of the now owners is said to be a returned soldier who has seen much servjeo in Prance. On Thursday evening, at Greytown, a social and dance was held under the auspices of tho looal branch of the Farmers' Union. Though tho weather was inclement tho attendance was one of the lamest over accommodated in the hall, over four hundred being present from all parts of the Wairarupa. A special decorative scheme in foliage intertwined m trellis work had been carried out by Mrs'. Eglinton, and an excellent supper was served by a committee of ladies. Prior to speaking on tarniers' union matters. Mr. Hugh Morrison, president of tho "Wairarapa sub-provincial district of the Farmers' Union, congratulated the branch on tho manner they had conduct od tho gathering. ■ The mouthly_ meeting of tha Masterton District High School Committee was held on Friday night, Mr. It. Brown being in tho chair. Also present wero: Messrs. A. Threadwell, A. Hendry, E. Mannell, .1. Me. V. Caldwell, P. T. Hcdman,. B. E. Church, and J. Isicol. In connection with tho appointment of a successor to Mr. D. P. Leslie, first-assistant, it was agreed that no action could be taken in tho matter until certain information had been rocoived; It was decided 'that repairs bo carried out to the main and side-schools duriug tlie holidays. / On Friday evening there was a largo attendance at Ivuox Hall, Masterton, uii tho occasion of n welcome home to the Itev. KouaUl Miller, M.A.,' C.F., and Mrs. Miller. During tho evening opportunity was taken to present Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Leslie, who aro leaving tho district, with a 6et of carvors and a desert set. Another departing member of tho congregation, Mrs. Gray, was the recipient of a tea service on a silver stand. The Hoy. G. T. Brown, M.A., mado the presentations on behalf of tho congregation.

At a.meeting of the committee of the Wairnrapn Returned Soldiers' Association on Friday evening the following resolution was passed: "That this meeting views with witu concern the report 01 a possible reinstatement of von Zedlitz as Professor of Modern Languages at the Victoria "University .College, and enters an emphatic protest againßt any alien occupying a position.iii the educational or public service of the Dominion, and that copies bo forwarded to the Registrar of the Now Zealand University, Headquarters of tho Dominion, and the Press." At a. meeting held recently it was decided to resuscitate tho Masterton Competitions Society (Incorporated). It was resolved to hold the competitions next April or May, and the following ■wore apnointed to act until the annual meeting to bo held in October:—President, Mr. W. H. Jackson; vice-presidents, Briga-dier-General Hart and Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P.: treasurer, Mr. AV. G. Lamb; committee, Messrs. Alex, Donald, Spencor Convpton, V. Joseph, Len. Travcrs, P. E. Goodcr. T. Perinain, B. P. L. Clayson, W. Igsulden, E. J. Heifer, and AV. Toomath. ■ In a match fired at Featherston on Friday night between members of the Feathorston and Masterton Miniaturo Eillo Clubs for the Pragnell Shield the scores were as follow:—Featherston, 982; Masterton, 977 Soventy-fivo new members: have been elected to the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers' Association, making the total membership 750. A bogey match played on- Masterton Kolf links on Saturday resulted as follows:—C. A. Gumming, handicap fourteen, one down. J. G. Bee, handicap eight, two down. T. H. Horton, scratch, three down.
