MANAWATU

The first meeting of tho Wellington and Manawatu Shipping Company, Ltd., was held at Foxton this week. The following were elected to tho directorate:— Messrs. A...E. Pearee, P. .T. Hennessy. A. Eraser, W. Signal, and Captain Harvey. It was reported that the s.s. Kennedy was to go on the Slip at "Wellington this week, and ought to be ready for the Wel-lington-Foxton run within two weeks. Mr. J. Linklater, of Kniranga, has been appointed to represent motorists at the Automobile Association Conference at Wellington. Lieutenant D. C. Low, N.Z.M.C, and Mrs. Low, are returnins to New Zealand. Lieutenant Low is a son cf Mr. D. AV. Low, headmaster of the College Street School at Palmerston. ' Tho Palmnrston North ladies' foursomo bogey competition was played on tho links at Hokowhitu, tiiis week, and was won by Mrs. L. A. Abraham and Miss Scanlon 3 down. Mrs. Freelli and Miss Pringel, 5 down, and Mis.s G. Moore and Miss' Fowler, 5 down, tied for second place. At a meeting of tho executive of the Manawatu Hockey Association this week, with reference to Feildiug's application for affiliation, it was decided to write to tho New Zealand Association, drawing attention to certain '.rroneous statements, and asking that the question bo reopened. An application from the Canterbury Association for a guarantee of a portion of their travelling expenses from Wellington to Palmerston was not acceded to. Advico has been received in Woodville of the death at San Francisco of Private John H. Moriarty, son of Mr. J. R-. Moriarty, a resident of AVoodvillo in the early stages of the district's development, and later of New South Wales. Tho lato Private Moriarty transferred from tho 2nd King Edward Horse to the New Zealand Division early in tho war, and at tho end of 1916 was invalided to New Zealand. Subsequently he proceeded to America. Deceased was a graduate of tho Sydney University and a brilliant platform speaker.
