AL'Donald with a handsome silver-mount-ed oak tray on Monday evening. Misa M'Donnld's friends also entertained her al a social evening, when she was tlio recipient of many useful presents. Several Carterton residents have becu summoned foi ringing tho Carterton firebell on tho Sunday night that news was received of the signing of the Peace Treaty. At a meeting of Ihe Carterton Druids' Lodge on Monday evening, Bro. W. Webb, P.A., wad presented with a Past Arch collar. It was ' announced that sinco tho commencement of the present year, twonty r fivo benefit members had been initiated into the order. Tim Dnlefield residents have arranged to hold a, plain, fancy, aud masquerade hall on Thursday evening, in aid of tlio Soldiers' Memorial I'und. At a meeting of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band on Monday evening, Bandsman W. Kay, who recently returned from nctiro service, was appointed sergeant.

Mr. A. C. Holms has tendered his resignation, of the office of secretary to Loyal Unity Lodge, I'eatherston, after a lengthy term of service. He has also, for health reasons, resigned from the position of clerk to the South Wairarapa River Board, which ho has held for nearly a decado. Brigadier-General Hart and Mr. W. B. Matheson have been elected members of the Masterton Progressive League. Mr. 11. E. Williams, .of tho Masterton Tolegraph Office, left j'esterday to attend a conference of tho Post and Telegraph Officers' Association which takes place in Wellington to-day. Mr. G. W. Woods has taken up his duties as postmaster at Paaiatua. The following have been elected to fill the vacancies on tho Masterton Progressive League :—President, Mr, F. W. Temple; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. W. Chapman, and J. H. Naylor; committee, Messrs, Travers, Joseph, and Conder. It is likely that tho Railway authorities will not permit toachers .or scholars to travel during tho coming holidays. If permission is not granted many pupils of the Masterton High School who wish to return to their homes in Bketahuna will be seriously inconvenienced. The Education Board conferred with the Traffic Manager on the subject yesterday, and some definite arrangements should bo como to prior to tho holidays. In connection with the recent allotment of eight workors' dwellings to Masterton, the Labour Department yesterday received word- that tho purchase of an area of land suitable for building on had been confirmed by tho Minister. Tlio block selected comprises six acres, and as at present subdivided would provide for the erection of twenty houses. It is proposed, however, to again subdivide it. so that eventually thirty sections will be available. Tho land is situated at Kuripuni, and bounded on the north and south sides respectively by Cockburn and Short Streets, on tho east by High Street, the main road to Carterton, and on the west by South Road. An unformed road, Donald Street, running between Cock-' burn and Short Streets, divides tho block in two but as soon as the buildings have been erected tho borough authorities will improve and bring these roads into lino with the other roads in the locality. The site is a little over a milo from the Post Office, and is in close proximity ( to tlio District High School. Gas and water may be laid on from the High Street mains, but the drainage systoin rnavnot be ready for another year, as the extension work being carried out by the council has had to be suspended owing to lack of cement. The Government architect will arrive shortly from Wellington, and will confer with the eight successful applicants, following which tenders will bo called, and the work proceeded with. The sections over, nfter the eight houses havo been completed, will be held by the Government until a further grant enables the building of other houses. Altogether twenty-five applications were forwarded from Masterton for consideration. The Executive Committoe, of the Masterton. Progressive Leaguo has suggested that the sen-ices of an organising secretary be obtained at a remuneration of ,£SO per year, and that to meet the extra expense the membership subscription be increased to one guinea per annum. A meeting will be held'shortly to consider the proposition. At a recent meeting of the Masterton Progressive Leaguo it was-stated that a letter had been written to the South Wairarapa County Council, asking that steps be taken to further the hydro-elec-tric scheme. No reply liad been receiv ed so far, and it was suggested that a public meeting be called to express the indignation of the pooplo at tho delay in prosecuting the scheme.

At a meeting cf Labour representatives Inst night Mr. W. Candy, a member of the Mosterton Borough Council, was selected as the Labour candidate to contest the Mastcrton scat.
