(Rec. July 24, 10.35 p.m.)
London, July 23. In the House- of Commons, on the third reading of the Finance Biii, the Independent Liberals denounced the application for preference to the mandate territories.
Mr. Austen Chamberlain said that nothing in the Bill committed tho House to Imperial preference in the mandate territories. .There was no intention of doing anything inconsistent with the mandates. The Bill merely empowered the Government to apply preference by Order-in-Council, whicli* could be rejected by either House. There was no intention of securing a selfish advantage or of acting contrary to the spirit of the League of Nations, The rejection of the Bill was moved on the ground that Imperial preference was objectionable. This was defeated by 219 to 18—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
