"KOOKABURRA" COINS
DESIGN FOR NICKEL PENNIES.
I Nickel pennies and halfpennies will probabiy be issued from the Melbourne Mint in the course of the , next few months, For some time past the Mint officials have been working on the question of design and other details. Aβ a result specimens of the proposed new coins, bearing the figure of the kookaburra as a. distinctive Australian bird ion one side, will shortly be submitted to tho Treasury officials for approval. It is considered that tho introduction of these coins will be justified by their ■lightness and hardness as compared with 'the present "coppers." The design and I mako will ensure that there is no dangw of confounding them with the silver cuins,. a risk which does not seem, w troublo anyone in the case of the nickel coins of Continental countries.
