NELSON SCIENTISTS
A GLOWING TRIBUTE. By ToleuraDh— Preea Association. . Nalson, July 24. In the course of his ulnuial Cawthron lecture, Dr. Cockayne paid a glowing tribute to' Nelson scientists, lie referred to the work done long ago by Sir David Monro, Mr. W. T. L. Travel's, mid Mr. Sinclair (who was drowned while conducting research work in the Rangitata Kiver). Coming to the present time he described .Jiiss Winifred Betts as the most brilliant woman scientist in New Zealand, while' Sir Ernest Kutherford (an old boy of Nelson College) ranked with Sir Isaac Newton. The Rev. Dr. John HollowajV of Hokitika, who was one oi the ten leading Iwtanists in the world, was also a Ne.sou boj. Dr. Cockayne spoke of the part Nelson ought to play in the botanical world, and with Hi' assistance of the Cnwthron Institute Nel6on ought to be facile princeps in botany, which was most important for a great fanning community such as New Zealand.
